Universal Dividing Head
Product Code : LSK-MMTM-10607
Universal Dividing Head (SKU LSK-MMTM-10607), also known as an indexing head, is a milling-machine attachment that rotates a workpiece to exact angles or equal divisions. Tool rooms and production shops use it, and in training it is the standard way to teach indexing and gear cutting in ITI, polytechnic and TVET machining workshops. The head is available through Science Lab Supplies, which sends it from Ambala, India, to institutes, colleges, tender contractors and distributors.
Specifications
Three sizes of the 1:40 dividing head are compared side by side in the table below. In short, each is indexed manually by hand crank, so 40 crank turns rotate the spindle once and one turn moves it 9 degrees; an indexing plate sets any angle or circular division, and both indirect and differential indexing are possible.

Applications and Experiments for the Universal Dividing Head
Mounted on the table of a milling machine, the head lets trainees divide a blank into equal parts and turn it through set angles between cuts. Its applications are spiral and cam milling, curved slots, cutter flutes and gear teeth, all core indexing exercises in machinist training.
- Gear teeth cutting with a form cutter on a Universal Milling Machine, a core ITI Machinist and Tool and Die Maker exercise.
- Spiral and cam milling with the cutter carried on a Milling Arbor.
- Milling curved slots and machining the flutes of milling cutters, which are later sharpened on a Universal Tool and Cutter Grinder.
- Diploma and B.Tech workshop technology: calculating simple and differential indexing.
Standard Scope of Supply
The Universal Dividing Head is supplied as one head in the centre height you select (115, 140 or 165 mm), with its hand crank and indexing plate as described above. The milling machine, tailstock and cutters are separate; any optional accessories are listed on the quotation.
Packing, MOQ and Lead Time
Tell us which centre height you need and how many heads, whether one for a demonstration or several for a machinist section. The quotation will show packing, delivery time and price for that number, and a milling machine or arbors can be quoted with it.
Registered as an exporter with an Importer-Exporter Code, Science Lab Supplies can ship to buyers in Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Oman. Give the centre height and quantity on the contact page, combine head and machine in the enquiry cart, or read the lab tender page if the order is tendered.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the 1:40 ratio work?
Forty turns of the crank rotate the spindle one full revolution, so one crank turn moves it 9 degrees. Part turns are set with the holes of the indexing plate to reach other angles and divisions.
Which size should a training workshop choose?
Match the centre height to the milling machine and the work diameter. The heads come in 115, 140 and 165 mm centre heights, weighing about 65, 90 and 125 kg.
Who supplies the Universal Dividing Head?
Milling sections in ITI centres, polytechnics, TVET colleges and engineering colleges can obtain the head from Science Lab Supplies in Ambala, India, which also quotes it to contractors and distributors handling tenders.
Can it do differential indexing?
Yes. The head is suitable for indirect as well as differential indexing, which extends the divisions that can be produced for gear cutting practice.
Related Milling, Gear and Indexing Equipment
The dividing head works on a milling machine with arbor-mounted cutters, and gear theory is easier to grasp beside a tooth-profile model. These items cover workholding, arbors, gear generation, force measurement and CNC milling, so an indexing and milling station can be quoted together.
- Long Milling Arbors — a full set comprises the arbor with bearing bushes, spacers, nut and keys.
- Tilting and Swiveling Vice — hardened and ground jaws carrying one vertical and two horizontal V-grooves.
- Generation of Involute Gear Tooth Profile — three acrylic discs of 450, 300 and 200 mm pitch circle diameter with a rack-type cutter for tracing tooth profiles.
- Milling Tool — octagonal-ring strain-gauge unit for studying milling forces in three directions.
- CNC Trainer Milling Machine — X, Y and Z traverses of 400, 150 and 300 mm.
- CNC Retrofitting Kit for Milling Machine — 3/2-axis CNC controller for a milling machine, with visual G-code display.
