Reynolds Apparatus
Product Code : LSK-TWL-10819
Reynolds Apparatus (SKU LSK-TWL-10819) makes flow regimes visible: a thin stream of dye is injected into water flowing through a glass tube, and its behaviour shows whether the flow is laminar, transitional or turbulent. It is one of the first practicals in fluid mechanics courses for engineering degree and diploma students. Science Lab Supplies manufactures the apparatus in Saha, Ambala, India (Plot 448, HSIIDC Industrial Area) and supplies it direct to institutions, tender contractors and distributors.
Specifications
All specifications of the Reynolds apparatus, from constant head tank to dye system, are tabulated below. In short, a borosilicate glass tube with a bell-mouth entrance runs from a 40-litre constant head tank to an outlet cock, and dye reaches a central copper or stainless steel capillary from a stainless steel vessel through polythene tubing.

Applications and Experiments for the Reynolds Apparatus
The apparatus is used to find the Reynolds number for different flow rates and identify the flow type. At low flow the dye stays as a straight thread; as the cock is opened it wavers and then mixes completely, and the measured discharge gives the Reynolds number at each stage.
- B.Tech/B.E. civil, mechanical and chemical engineering fluid mechanics labs: laminar and turbulent flow.
- Polytechnic diploma practicals: calculating Reynolds number from measured discharge, with water temperature read on a Glass Thermometer to select the viscosity.
- Finding the approximate flow rates at which transition begins in the glass tube, a result later linked to pipe friction factors on the Fluid Friction Measurement rig.
Keep the constant head steady and let the water settle before each reading, as disturbances in the tank make the dye thread break up early.
Standard Scope of Supply
The set comprises the glass tube with bell mouth and outlet cock, capillary and dye vessel with polythene tubing, 40-litre constant head tank, 60-litre sump tank, FHP pump, control panel, measuring cylinder and electronic stopwatch on a painted structure. Dye is used by the laboratory as required.
Packing, MOQ and Lead Time
Quotations can cover a single Reynolds apparatus or a full set of fluid mechanics lab experiments. Each one gives packing, delivery time and price for the quantity requested, and associated benches, including the friction and flow-visualisation rigs below, can go on the same quotation.
As a registered exporter with an Importer-Exporter Code, Science Lab Supplies can ship to buyers in Vietnam, Malaysia, Peru, Egypt, Iraq and Nigeria. Enquiries for the Reynolds apparatus are welcome on the contact page and through the enquiry cart, and the lab tender page is available for tender buying.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Reynolds' experiment show?
It shows the change from laminar to turbulent flow in a pipe. The dye thread stays straight in laminar flow and disperses in turbulent flow, and the Reynolds number is calculated for each flow rate.
How is the discharge measured?
Water leaving the outlet is collected in the measuring cylinder and timed with the electronic stopwatch, both included with the apparatus. Dividing the collected volume by the time gives the discharge used to find velocity and the Reynolds number.
Is Science Lab Supplies the manufacturer or a trader?
Science Lab Supplies is the manufacturer. The apparatus is built at its own factory in Saha, Ambala, India, and quotations are sent directly from the factory.
Can it be quoted with other fluid mechanics equipment?
Yes. Send the full list of hydraulics items for your lab or tender through the contact page and they will be priced on one quotation from Science Lab Supplies, an engineering lab equipment maker in India.
