Applications and Experiments for the Coiled Tube Plug Flow Reactor
In an ideal plug flow reactor there is no mixing along the flow and complete mixing across it, so concentration changes along the length only. The coil adds turbulence through constant change of direction and secondary flow, so a higher rate constant is expected than in a straight tube.

Why use a coiled tube instead of a straight tube?
The frequent change of direction in the coil creates secondary flow and turbulence, which improves radial mixing, so a higher rate constant is expected than in a straight-tube plug flow reactor.
Where are samples taken?
Reactants enter at the lower end of the coil and leave at the top, where samples are collected for analysis. Sampling at several rotameter settings gives the conversion at different residence times for the rate constant calculation.
