Discharge Over a Notch
Product Code : LSK-FM-10455
Discharge Over a Notch apparatus (SKU LSK-FM-10455) shows clearly how weirs work as simple flow regulators. Fitted on top of the Digital Hydraulic Bench, it lets students relate upstream water level to discharge for two V-notch weirs and a rectangular notch, then compare results with theory. The tank and weirs are manufactured by Science Lab Supplies at its Plot 448 site in the HSIIDC Industrial Area, Saha, Ambala, India, and quoted direct to engineering colleges, polytechnics, contractors and distributors.
Specifications
Each feature of the notch tank and its three weirs is given its own row below. Briefly, a moulded tank whose middle section forms a channel receives bench water at its wide end and discharges at a deeper end where the flow is easy to see, while each weir sits in a sealed groove and a beam-mounted depth gauge measures the surface.

Applications and Experiments for the Discharge Over a Notch Apparatus
The apparatus finds how discharge over a notch depends on the head above its crest and compares V and rectangular shapes. Readings are repeated for equal decrements in head until the stream no longer springs clear of the notch, and discharge is plotted against head, and log against log, for each notch.
- B.E./B.Tech civil engineering: calibration of rectangular and V-notches.
- Coefficient of discharge and the head-discharge law from log plots.
- Comparing two V-notch profiles with a rectangular notch.
- Diploma civil and irrigation courses: weirs as flow regulators, beside other open-channel structures such as the Sluice Gate with Tappings and the circular and rectangular models of the Culvert.
Standard Scope of Supply
The set comprises the moulded tank and channel, two V-notch weirs, one rectangular notch weir and the adjustable depth gauge with its beam. The Digital Hydraulic Bench, which supplies the water, regulates the flow and receives the tank outlet, is available separately.
Packing, MOQ and Lead Time
Request a price for a single unit or for several to run alongside each hydraulic bench. We quote the packing, delivery time and price for the exact quantity, and other engineering lab equipment in India, including benches and weir sets, can appear on the same quotation.
Holding an Importer-Exporter Code as a registered exporter, Science Lab Supplies can ship to buyers in Uganda, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, the Philippines and Nepal. Tell us the number of benches you are equipping on the contact page, add the notch tank to the enquiry cart with any weir sets, or open the lab tender page if the order is tender-bound.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which notches come with the Discharge Over a Notch apparatus?
Two different V-notch weirs and one rectangular notch weir are included. Each fits a sealed groove in the channel section of the moulded tank, so the notches can be changed between experiments.
Is a hydraulic bench required?
Yes. The apparatus fits on top of the Digital Hydraulic Bench, which feeds water to the wide end of the tank and is used to regulate the flow. The bench is available separately.
Is Science Lab Supplies the manufacturer or a trader?
The moulded notch tank, its three weirs and the depth gauge beam are all products of Science Lab Supplies' Saha, Ambala works in India, which is also where the price and delivery terms on your quotation are drawn up.
How is the head over the notch measured?
An adjustable depth gauge, attached to a beam across the channel, measures the free water surface upstream of the weir. The head is read at each flow setting and paired with the discharge for the graphs.

These items cover the same open-flow topic from other angles: a larger notch set with extra profiles, the bench that feeds this tank, flume structures such as a spillway, a gate and a siphon, an orifice tank, and a narrow channel for visualising flow. Any of them can share one quotation.
- Notched Weirs — holder with rectangular and two V notches, plus an advanced Cipoletti (trapezoidal) notch set.
- Digital Hydraulic Bench — trough and removable drain valve in the worktop catch discharged water.
- Spillway — four parts, including a detachable ski jump and a removable toothed block.
- Radial Sector Gate — head/flow and discharge characteristics of a radial gate; flume not included.
- Self-Regulating Siphon — clear acrylic siphon that adjusts its discharge while keeping a mostly constant upstream level.
- Flow Through an Orifice — overflow pipe and diffuser set the head on the orifice.
- Flow Visualisation Channel — 15 mm wide acrylic channel with gates, weirs, hydrofoils and dye injectors.
